Cloe is one of our ‘open air’ performers and kindly sat down for a quick chat.
From hidden lakes to ocean-scapes, Open Air is a vivid collision of music and place. Fast becoming an essential experience for locals and visitors alike, this intimate outdoor concert series features some of Australia’s most innovative musicians set against the Sunshine Coast’s spectacular natural environment.
Cloe, hi! Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself? What’s your (short) story?
I’m an artist from Toowoomba. I’ve been writing and releasing music for about 3 years now. I have two cats and a dog!
Has music always been a big part of your life? What are some of your earliest musical memories?
Most of my family members around me were musicians growing up, so music was a really massive part of my life, for most of my life. My earliest music memories are being backstage trying to go to sleep next to massive PA systems thumping through the floor while mum and dad played their set.
What made you head down this career path? Was there a defining moment where you thought this is what you wanted to do?
I remember always wanting to be a singer and be on stage like my mum, but I would never sing. One day I was in my room singing to myself and my mum overheard — she called my grandad (who worked in the music industry at the time) and told him to come over. When he arrived, she told me to sing that song to him, so I did, and it all kind of grew from there. Grandad and I started to record cover songs and do little live shows around Brisbane.
What keeps you busy outside of work? What’s a perfect day?
Playing computer games and cuddling with my cats.
You’re part of our Open Air Series, which celebrates place. It’s too late now (for the festival) but where’s your dream place to play in Australia?
I don’t think it gets much better than a beach on the Sunny Coast, to be honest.
What are you hyped to see at the festival?
I’m very excited to see Circa’s Peepshow — I’m always amazed at the balance and talent in those types of shows, so I wont be missing that one.
Where does it go from here? What’s next for Cloe Terare?
I’ve got a deluxe EP on the way which will feature some fresh music and I’ve just announced my next tour!
Before you go. I’m sure you’ve got great taste in music. Mind if we get five songs to add to the Horizon Festival Spotify playlist?
5 songs on my playlist right now are:
Mutual Friend — Jessie Reyez
Mean Girl — Manny Dibiachi
Sucker — WALTA
Nightcall — Kavinsky
Mystery — iiiConic & CLOE TERARE 😉
Any final words before we see you at Horizon Festival?
I’m excited to come visit the beautiful coast and have a jam with y’all!
